Understanding the Chinese Market - Hong Kong's Economy: Past, Present & Future

Prof. Howard Davies of Hong Kong Polytechnic explains Hong Kong in 1.5hrs~
It's exam week at IE, but I didn't want to pass up the opportunity to learn new things... especially if the opportunity is laid out right in front of you. The IE China Club organized an information session on Hong Kong, where they invited the Associate Dean of Hong Kong Polytechnic University Prof. Howard Davies to share his knowledge on Hong Kong, after spending some 20 years there himself.

He essentially summarized Hong Kong under a theme of persistence~ under China, all way to the British occupation, then post the handover. I learned quite a number of new things... it was not just a history lesson but more of the ins & outs of the Hong Kong economy and what it has really gone through.

He likewise shared how Hong Kong managed to succeed economically (together with Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea), despite a lack of innovation (he mentions that they have mastered the OEM model, running things at large scale under low cost... with the store in HK and the factory in China). It was really informative, in my opinion~ even despite the fact that I'm fairly familiar with Hong Kong already.

I really appreciate opportunities like these in school... and I look forward to organizing a session myself in the future (meaning, possibly inviting someone from the advertising / media industry to share knowledge to all / interested participants). Anyway, that's that for today~ now I have to resume studies. Big week ahead!
